Brothers in Yarn

NYC 2016 / Video

Brothers in Yarn was, at first, equal parts band and book club. Known for his work as the front man in Golden Bloom, BIY brainchild Shawn Fogel found a new way to approach songwriting that incorporates both the community of a reading group and the inspiration of immersing himself in a different kind of art. Each month last year, Fogel read a book with friends and then debuted a song inspired by the book within 30 days. Already an exceptional songwriter, this is Fogel’s most ambitious project to-date (and an exercise in creativity that would serve to challenge and stretch Fogel’s artistic barriers.)

“The idea of reading a book a month, and writing and recording a song inspired by that book each month would not only force me to bring reading back into my life, but force me to learn how to use my home studio and set aside regular time for writing new music,” Fogel says.

Best of 2016 Album Selection! – The results, now available on the brand new Brothers in Yarn debut album, are remarkable. Recorded almost entirely by Fogel in his home studio, punctuated by the powerhouse drumming of Jason Hammel (Mates of State), and mixed by Greg Giorgio (The National, The Head and The Heart), this debut Brothers in Yarn is Fogel’s most adventurous work to date. This is really just an incredible music concept made real one that should be listened to time and again!

What’s even more special? Fogel wrote and crafted the songs by his lonesome, so in order to bring them to life in the live setting for The Outlaw Roadshow and for this video session, he had to quickly train others to play along. Fogel is joined in this video session by gifted East Coast playersMatthew Girard and Scott Thompson. The trio here are surrounded by the paintings of artist Felipe Molina!
