High Fascination

High Fascination

BREAKING SOUNDS – In their first appearance at this year’s Outlaw Roadshow New York in October, High Fascination, wowed audiences – but perhaps most importantly, they appeared to have wowed all the musicians and players in the crowd. The band have been a mainstay on The Outlaw Roadshow radio program in throughout the Summer. The band’s  2016 – music blogger Ryan Spaulding having found their music submission in his inbox.

“This band is building a really kind of lovely pop aesthetic that is reaching people. Out front in pop but they clearly have an appreciation of folk and of the history of music. Andrew Weiss (singer, songwriter) is very clever,” said Spaulding “We’re working with so many great bands, so this shouldn’t be taken lightly: I’m expecting really big things from these guys on the road ahead. They’re really talented players with so much out in front of them and we’re damn lucky to have found them.”

One To Watch – In this session, High Fascination; Andrew Weiss, Mark McIntyre, Eddie Matthews, Amir Mortezai and Sam Gautier, are surrounded by the original paintings from artist Felipe Molina!

Brothers In Yarn

Brothers in Yarn

Brothers in Yarn was, at first, equal parts band and book club. Known for his work as the front man in Golden Bloom, BIY brainchild Shawn Fogel found a new way to approach songwriting that incorporates both the community of a reading group and the inspiration of immersing himself in a different kind of art. Each month last year, Fogel read a book with friends and then debuted a song inspired by the book within 30 days. Already an exceptional songwriter, this is Fogel’s most ambitious project to-date (and an exercise in creativity that would serve to challenge and stretch Fogel’s artistic barriers.)

“The idea of reading a book a month, and writing and recording a song inspired by that book each month would not only force me to bring reading back into my life, but force me to learn how to use my home studio and set aside regular time for writing new music,” Fogel says.

Best of 2016 Album Selection! – The results, now available on the brand new Brothers in Yarn debut album, are remarkable. Recorded almost entirely by Fogel in his home studio, punctuated by the powerhouse drumming of Jason Hammel (Mates of State), and mixed by Greg Giorgio (The National, The Head and The Heart), this debut Brothers in Yarn is Fogel’s most adventurous work to date. This is really just an incredible music concept made real one that should be listened to time and again!

What’s even more special? Fogel wrote and crafted the songs by his lonesome, so in order to bring them to life in the live setting for The Outlaw Roadshow and for this video session, he had to quickly train others to play along. Fogel is joined in this video session by gifted East Coast playersMatthew Girard and Scott Thompson. The trio here are surrounded by the paintings of artist Felipe Molina!

The Roosevelts

The Roosevelts

The Roosevelts have become one of my favorite sounds of 2016. The band, anchored by founders Jason Kloess and James Mason, entered our lives in Nashville this September and joined us once again in New York City in late October to record this video session which captures their infectious grooves and perfect tone. The songs are from their new album, “The Greatest Thing You’ll Ever Learn,” – it’s a must-have, breakout effort.

“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return.’ It’s the closing line from a song my grandmother used to sing to me as a child,” says Mason. (The song, titled “Nature Boy,” was made famous by American Jazz singer Nat King Cole in 1948.) “The melody and words have stayed with me all these years and the sentiment within ties perfectly to the theme of this new record,” explains Mason when asked about the inspiration behind the album title. For the first time ever: check out this Outlaw session which starts out with the band’s latest single, “Belly of The Beast!”

In Nashville we ate good barbecue and drank beer with these fine gents. In New York, we got to sit down with the band and watch other acts play before they jumped in and recorded one of their own. In the video, The Roosevelts are surrounded by the paintings of artist Felipe Molina. We think you’re going to love this band!

Alan Sermadjian

Alan Semerdjian

Alan Semerdjian is a poet, a teacher, a consummate live performer and the embodiment of everything aesthetically we’re trying to do with The Outlaw Roadshow.

Alan is joined in this season by an incredible all-star lineup making this session an unbelievable treat for the senses. Mike Bloom (Jenny Lewis, Julian Casablancas and The Elected), Dave Diamond (Assembly of Dust) and Matt Iselin (Half Step). Semerjian is, of course, a repeat customer. But 2016 marks the first time these three,  other fine gentlemen have appeared on our Outlaw stages and in our videos. This is a trip!

Bloom, Iselin and Diamond previously worked with Semerdjian to craft his latest album, Quiet Songs for Loud Times. That album offers stunningly beautiful songs and a gorgeous, rolling emotional tide, some of which makes an appearance here in this video session. The artists are flanked here by the creations of painter Felipe Molina.

Pat McGee Band

Pat McGee Band

There were tons of surprises in store for us in New York at this year’s Outlaw Roadshow. But none, perhaps, more pleasant than having Pat McGee and the Band come in and sit down for a session and a few laughs. Pat’s incredible and his music is capable of transforming the room. You only get that good after relentlessly performing. Pat has toured for the last ten years all over the United States (according to his website: he even did a 98 show-stand in a 103 day-stretch, which is utterly insane.) The results here speak for themselves: This is a band of consummate performers.

This dude’s the real deal – and a real cool cat to talk with. To have him sit in for us, was – needless to say, a huge treat. What a great band! I loved every minute of it.  This intimate look at the band surrounded by the art of painter Felipe Molina provides the perfect stage for discovery.
